Your Bridge to Success: Linking Past Experience with Future Goals
The Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers (EMCN) offers the Engineers' and Technologists' Integration Program (ETIP) each year from January to October. This is a program specifically designed for internationally educated engineers seeking rapid and effective integration into the Canadian engineering field.
The purpose of the ETIP Program is to facilitate the professional accreditation and labour market access of internationally educated engineers through training which meets local business demand by developing participants' English language proficiency and assisting in their adapting and improving of previously learned skills to Canadian Standards.
To participate in the Program, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- be a graduate of an engineering or engineering technologist degree program, from an international institution with significant study and experience in the engineering field
- be unemployed or a recipient of EI or SFI
- be a Landed Immigrant or new Canadian Citizen
- reside in the province of Alberta
- have the appropriate level of English Language proficiency as measured by the CLBA
- be highly motivated to work in the field of engineering
- be committed to complete the 10-month program
- meet the selection process requirements including providing required documentation and passing the PLAR and CLBA,as well as the interview conducted by the partner representatives
- meet the requirements for financial support or pay themselves
On completion of the program, participants will:
- have increased/refreshed their knowledge in engineering
- be more aware of Canadian standards, laws, workplace norms and expectations.
- communicate more effectively in the English language.
- have increased their computer skills, including MS Windows, Word, Excel and Access.
- have increased their awareness of Canadian labour market trends and their ability to conduct a successful job search.
- have acquired professional recognition and membership in a Canadian association recognized worldwide as Technologists'-in-Training (T.T.) with ASET (Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta)
- and increased employment prospects in Canada.
- started the process of registration with APEGGA (Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists, and Geophysicists of Alberta)
The program is a partnership between the Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers (EMCN), Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), and Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET).
Each partner contributes as follows:
- EMCN provides the Engineering Business Communication and Canadian Workplace Culture training; Computer training including MS Office, MS Project and AutoCAD; First Aid, CPR and WHMIS certification; as well as labour market/job search strategy training and supported job search.
- NAIT provides the customized technical training
- ASET provides the designation as T.T. on successful completion of the program

Next program begins January 7, 2013. Applications will be accepted until September 28, 2012.
