Recipients of the RISE 2010 Employer Awards
 

The Employer Awards recognize leadership and innovation in recruiting, integrating and retaining skilled immigrants.

For many skilled immigrants to Canada, the road to success is often thwarted because their education, training and experience are not recognized by many employers. Accreditation, Canadian work experience, access to information regarding opportunities and requirements are often difficult to acquire if they are not familiar with the processes and procedures. The EMCN has been active in helping skilled immigrants receive accreditation for their skills, and they partner with other agencies such as theEdmonton Regional Immigrant Employment Council (ERIEC) through mentorship programs to help newcomers acquire jobs that match their skills.

 

Seven years ago the Mennonite Centre for Newcomers created the RISE Awards to recognize the
success and excellence of immigrants and those who support them. The RISE team identified that there has been another component to the success of helping immigrants to become full participants in society, and that is the growing number of employers who are engaged in best practices in diversity management. Through the hiring, inclusion, retention and integration of skilled immigrants, employers are realizing the benefits of a welcoming and diverse workplace.

The luncheon featured award presentations in 5 categories with keynote speaker, Angela Santiago, CEO of the Little Potato Company, Woman of Vision, July 2009.   Jefferson Humphreys of Alberta Primetime will MC, the Executive Director of EMCN with greetings, as well as Councillor Amarjeet Sohi on behalf of the Mayor and City Council, and a performance by Maria Dunn and the Global Voices Choir.
